The Mat That Started With a Misspelling

BMAT happened because someone forgot how to spell “bath mat” on a wholesale order form. Three hundred yoga mats showed up at our apartment instead of the bathroom rugs we needed for our Airbnb properties. Rather than dealing with international shipping returns, we rolled one out in the living room — and discovered it was actually the first yoga mat that didn’t make us want to quit yoga. The grip was unintentional genius. The thickness, accidentally perfect.

We started gifting them to friends who complained about sliding around in hot yoga or feeling every hardwood plank through their premium mats. Word spread through our Brooklyn building, then the neighborhood, then somehow we were shipping mats to strangers in Portland and Austin. The irony wasn’t lost on us: a typo created what two years of market research at our day jobs couldn’t — an honest product that solved real problems without trying to revolutionize wellness or promising enlightenment.

Today, BMAT still operates from that same apartment (though we’ve taken over the spare bedroom for inventory). We source from the same confused supplier who now knows we definitely mean yoga mats, not bathroom accessories. Every mat comes with the same accidental specifications that made the original batch worth keeping. We figured if a mistake could work this well, imagine what we could do on purpose — but honestly, we haven’t messed with the formula. Sometimes the best business plan is admitting you got lucky and trying not to screw it up.

Why Yogis Choose BMAT

“The BMAT Pro has completely changed my hot yoga practice. Even in 90-minute Bikram sessions, there’s zero slipping—my downward dog finally feels stable. Worth every penny for the grip alone.”

Maya Chen

“I’ve owned probably six yoga mats over the years, and the BMAT Essential is the first one that doesn’t smell like rubber for weeks. Plus, the alignment markers actually help me fix my warrior poses.”

Priya Nair

“Three months of daily use and my BMAT Plus still looks brand new—no peeling edges or worn spots where my feet land in sun salutations. My previous mat started falling apart after six weeks.”

Common Questions

What thickness is best for different types of practice?

The 6mm thickness provides optimal cushioning for most practices. It offers enough support for sensitive joints during floor poses while maintaining stability for standing positions. Those with knee or wrist concerns often find this thickness ideal, as it reduces pressure without compromising balance.

What’s the expected lifespan with use?

With proper care and regular practice (3-4 times per week), the mat typically maintains its quality for 12-18 months. Signs it needs replacement include thinning areas, loss of grip, or visible wear patterns. Heavy daily use may require more frequent replacement.

Will the mat stay in place during practice?

The non-slip surface grips well on most floor types, including hardwood, tile, and carpet. The textured bottom prevents sliding, even during dynamic movements or heated sessions where perspiration increases. Proper placement on a clean, dry floor ensures maximum stability.

How should the mat be cleaned and maintained?

After each session, wipe down the surface with a damp cloth and mild soap solution. For deeper cleaning, the mat can be hand-washed with gentle detergent and air-dried flat, away from direct sunlight. Regular cleaning helps maintain grip and extends the mat’s lifespan.

How portable is it for classes or travel?

At approximately 2.5 pounds, the mat strikes a balance between cushioning and portability. It rolls up compactly and fits in most standard carriers. The included carrying strap makes transport to studios or outdoor locations convenient.

Is there an odor when first unpacked?

Some natural rubber smell may be present initially, which is normal for eco-friendly materials. This scent typically fades within a few days of airing out. Rolling the mat out in a well-ventilated space speeds up this process.
